Autograph manuscript copy of Eugene Field's Yvytot, written in November 1889 and meant to be presented to friend and colleague John F. Ballantyne. About half of the text is written by Field in an elaborate engrossed hand, with illuminated capitals and some small illustrations, while the last half of the text is written in his usual neat handwriting, with less elaborately illuminated capitals.

Eugene Field, an American writer, was born in 1850 to Rosewell Field and Frances Reed. After his mother's death in 1856, he and his brother were sent to live with a cousin in Amherst, Massachusetts. He studied at Williams College from 1868-69. He then studied for a short time at Knox College in Illinois and at the University of Missouri. He married Julia Sutherland Comstock on October 16, 1873.
